I compared current manufacturer specifications and retailer product identities. I didn't perform hands-on leak, drop, or long-term durability testing.
Get Rubbermaid Brilliance if you want secure latches without carrying glass. Get Bentgo Prep if you need ten inexpensive divided trays. Pick Pyrex Freshlock if glass is worth the extra weight.
Three good picks for different workdays
Meal prep containers get annoying fast when the one that reheats well is too heavy for your bag, or the lightweight divided tray turns out to be a terrible place for soup. For work lunches, the commute matters just as much as capacity.
I based this comparison on current manufacturer specifications and Amazon product identities. I didn't personally leak-test, drop-test, or use these containers long term.
Side-by-side comparison
| Pick | Material | Capacity | Compartments | Set | Microwave note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rubbermaid Brilliance | Plastic | 2.85 cups | 2 | 5 containers | Lid vent, open latches |
| Bentgo Prep | PFAS- and BPA-free plastic | 4 cups | 3 | 10 containers | Tray only, remove lid |
| Pyrex Freshlock | Tempered glass with plastic lid | 4 cups | 1 | 5 containers | Container and lid rated safe |
Rubbermaid Brilliance 2-Compartment Meal Prep Containers
A five-container plastic set with secure latches, a compact divided layout, and manufacturer-rated leakproof lids.
Commuters who carry saucy entrées and a side, want a lighter container, and value a tightly latched lid.
At 2.85 cups, it holds less than either 4-cup pick, and the fixed divider is unnecessary for one-bowl meals.
You pack large portions, want glass for reheating, or prefer a single open compartment.
- Set
- 5 containers + 5 lids
- Capacity
- 2.85 cups each
- Layout
- 2 fixed compartments
- Care
- Microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe
Bentgo Prep 3-Compartment Meal Prep Containers
Ten lightweight divided trays with a full 4-cup capacity, three compartments, and measurements molded into the trays.
A full week of lunches, separate sides, and shoppers who need more containers without moving to glass.
Bentgo says the lids keep food fresh but does not describe this model as leakproof, so it is a weaker choice for soups or a bag that tips sideways.
Your meals are liquid-heavy, you want fewer pieces to store, or you prefer a rigid locking lid.
- Set
- 10 trays + 10 lids
- Capacity
- 4 cups each
- Size
- 9.5 × 6.6 × 2 inches
- Care
- Microwave tray only, top-rack dishwasher safe
Pyrex Freshlock 10-Piece Meal Prep Glass Storage Set
Five 4-cup glass containers with four-tab locking lids, an open interior, and write-and-erase labels.
People who reheat at work, want glass that resists food stains and odors, and do not need built-in compartments.
Glass adds carry weight and requires more careful handling. This set also keeps the meal in one open compartment.
You walk or bike with lunch, need divided sections, or are likely to move a cold glass container directly into a very hot environment.
- Set
- 5 glass containers + 5 lids
- Capacity
- 4 cups each
- Size
- 6.75 × 6.75 × 2.75 inches
- Warranty
- 2-year limited warranty
Match the container to the routine
Pick the commute before the material
Glass can make sense if you drive to work and have a refrigerator nearby. If you walk, bike, or carry a laptop in the same bag, weight and secure latches matter a lot more. And no food container replaces an insulated bag when your lunch needs to stay cold.
Capacity is not the same as usable layout
The Bentgo and Pyrex picks both hold 4 cups, but one divides that space into three sections and the other leaves it open. Fixed compartments work well for an entrée plus sides. They are less flexible for salads, pasta, or one large portion. The smaller Rubbermaid set is the middle ground when two compartments match your usual meal.
Follow the lid instructions in the microwave
Rubbermaid says to open its latches so the built-in vents can release steam. Bentgo says to remove the lid and microwave the tray only. Pyrex rates both pieces microwave safe, but venting and the brand’s glass safety guidance still matter. Product-specific instructions should win over a general habit.
Leakproof does not mean temperature-safe
A tight lid helps contain food. It does not keep a perishable lunch cold. USDA guidance recommends an insulated bag with at least two cold sources when the food will not go directly into a refrigerator.
Frequently asked questions
Is glass or plastic better for work meal prep?
Glass is a strong fit when reheating and stain resistance matter more than weight. Plastic is easier to carry and usually easier to stack in quantity. The commute and the food you pack are more useful decision points than treating one material as universally better.
Can these containers go in the microwave?
All three manufacturers allow microwave use, but not in the same way. Open the Rubbermaid latches, remove the Bentgo lid and heat the tray only, and follow Pyrex venting and glass-safety instructions.
Are all three picks leakproof?
No. Rubbermaid describes its latched Brilliance lid as leakproof, and Pyrex describes Freshlock as airtight and leakproof. Bentgo describes the custom-fit lid as keeping food fresh but does not make the same leakproof claim for this model.
How many containers do I need for a workweek?
Five containers cover one lunch per weekday. Ten can help when two people prep together or when you want a second set in rotation, but they also require twice the storage space.
